David Suzuki brought his fundraising journey, ?The Human Element Tour,? to the Princess of Wales Theatre November 4, raising awareness of his latest project, ?the Nature Challenge.? Legendary rocker Randy Bachman and soul singer k-os showed their support for the cause by performing at the Toronto show.
Famed Canadian author Margaret Atwood introduced Suzuki, noting that he would be fully clothed ?for a change,? unlike a recent photo shoot where the scientist posed in the nude, except for a strategically placed leaf. The monotone Atwood had the charitable crowd, consisting of mainly older people, laughing when speaking about her friend Suzuki.
Suzuki blasted the government for not caring enough about the environment. ?It?s as if a monster economy will be ruined if we protect the environment. ?Some things we do because they are right,? he said before the crowd reacted in applause. ?How could an economy come before the environment? It?s the earth that makes everything possible and makes an economy.?
Suzuki clearly had help in choosing k-os to perform at the event, introducing him as ?a great hip-hop group taking over this city.? K-os has toured internationally and will be touring the United States with India.Arie, and the individual is not a ?group.?
He impressed the audience, made up of people who probably thought ?k-os? was misspelled in the program, with a four-song set. Sitting on a stool in front of a microphone, and accompanied by just a guitarist and a drummer, he sang passionately.
Noticeably absent from his set was ?Heaven Only Knows,? but since he was just a fresh face to the audience, nobody seemed to notice.
K-os said that when he was a child, Suzuki was someone he looked up to when thinking about science. ?He does the dishes you don?t want to.?
After intermission, Tara Cullis, Suzuki?s wife as well as the President of the David Suzuki Foundation, spoke about the ?Nature Challenge,? which offers 10 ways for Canadians to take responsibility for themselves and their environment. Suzuki is asking people to sign up for the challenge, and try to participate is at least 3 off the list. More information can be obtained at davidsuzuki.org.
Bachman, the concert?s headliner, told a story about each song he was performing before singing and playing his guitar. The former member of the Guess Who and the Bachman Turner Overdrive had the crowd singing along to such hits as ?American Woman,? ?You Ain?t Seen Nothing Yet,? and ?Taking Care of Business.? Suzuki was about to wrap up the show before some yells of ?encore? were heard by Bachman, which prompted him to play ?No Sugar Tonight.?
Suzuki?s challenge seems to be in full swing so far. After the show, hundreds of people signed up in the lobby, and just like Suzuki, they are eager to help save the environment.
