The surviving members of Run-DMC are looking back at the life of Jam Master Jay, Jason Mizell, who was murdered Wednesday while working in his New York studio.

“We grew up together,” Darryl “DMC” McDaniels said in a statement. “We lived two thirds of our lives together. He made every DJ not want to use a DAT machine. The whole music industry has lost a great talent. I always though we would be together forever. I will truly miss him.”

Eric Blamoville, the manager of the hip hop group, says there was more to Mizell than just his musical abilities. “Jason was not only a talented producer and DJ, he was a kind man, who had a passion for life and love for his family,” he tells the Associated Press.

Police are still searching for suspects and have no motive.
