Jam Master Jay, the legendary DJ from hip hop group Run DMC, was shot and killed on Wednesday, MTV News reports. He was 37.

Police told MTV that two men were killed at 7:30 PM ET in Queens, but could not identify the victims. Representatives for Run-DMC confirmed one of the victims is Jay, whose real name is Jason Mizell.

Allhiphop.com is reporting that Jay was in a studio when men entered and shot him.

Run DMC just celebrated their 20th anniversary, and they were planning on recording a new album and touring. They recently wrapped up a tour with Aerosmith and Kid Rock.

The trio was supposed to perform at half-time of Thursday’s Washington Wizards game.
