For the second time this year, Enrique Iglesias performed to a packed crowd of 5000 screaming fans at the Air Canada Center. This time around however, all the fans in the building could hear.
Plagued by sound problems, which prevented fans in the higher level from hearing, the last concert was a big disappointment for many. Enrique was sure not to upset them a second time, adding two sets of speakers that hung from the ceiling.
He even performed a more polished routine, which was expected since his last Toronto date was actually the first show of his tour. No sheets of lyrics this time, Iglesias had everything down pat.
As soon as he took the stage to perform, “Love 4 Fun,” the crowd stood up, and most didn?t sit down until the 90-minute set was over. Dressed in brown leather pants, a white t-shirt and a beige toque (which he left on his head the whole night), a silhouette of Iglesias emerged from the long white drapes hanging down.
With, “Love to See You Cry,” Iglesias spent most of the song lying down in the middle of the stage. He did this several times throughout the night, but properly choreographed to bring the mostly-female audience to a frenzy. Other performers would be accused of taking a nap, but not the skilled Iglesias.
He finally showed how he could work the stage, by moving around to “Bailamos,” as the energy picked up even more. It continued with “Rhythm Divine,” as people clapped and sang along.
A backup singer joined him for a duet of “Could I Have this Kiss Forever,” and she put sultry moves on him that would surely make his girlfriend, Anna Kournikova, very jealous.
Accompanied by an acoustic guitar, Iglesias sat down on a stool to perform some of his Spanish songs, as well as a verse from “Be With You.” That was followed by covers of “Stand By Me” and Prince?s “Purple Rain,” the latter of which he surprisingly didn?t sing that badly, considering the difference of his and Prince?s voices.
Another surprise came right after, when he performed his latest single, “Don?t Turn off the Lights.” While he usually shrieks at the end of the song, almost sounding like a little boy crying, he smartly left that part out.
While performing “Escape,” where Iglesias changed into a white tank-top, a drum solo in the middle cultivated the audience with lyricless rhythmic Latin music.
Iglesias pleased every female fan in “I?m Your Man,” seemingly pointing to every person, while slapping hands with the lucky few in the front row. He can?t be everyone?s man, but for this night, people extended their beliefs and suspended reality.
A “tradition,” as he put it, followed, as Iglesias called up a middle-aged fan from the audience and serenaded her with his sexy moves. Telling him she was married didn?t change a thing, as he put his moves into overdrive. A close-up, on a screen in the background, zoomed in on the lady hanging on to his backside for dear-life. The song was “Hero,” but nobody really paid attention to the music, because they were in an envious trance, staring as hard as they could, picturing that lady was them; except of course for the males in the audience who listened to the lyrics.
A complete version of “Be With You” brought sparkles shooting across the crowd, and appropriately, “Just Can?t Get Enough” ended the superb show.
Judging from the crowd, Iglesias is welcome back anytime to perform in Toronto, but it probably will be quite some time before he returns with new material.
Paulina Rubio opened the show, accompanied by four dancers. Wearing a short dress, Rubio?s Latin vibe was the perfect way to open an Iglesias concert. The set was solid, and she showed why she?s a household name in Mexico.
