Musicians Moonlighting on the Movie Screens

Posted by andPOP Staff on September 16th, 2002

Having a successful music career does not guarantee a successful cross-over into films, (did someone mention Madonna?). A lot of today’s hottest young female artists have made the transition into movies, but not with the same level of success.

BRITNEY SPEARS Dubbed, ‘The Princess of Pop’, by the media, (although her current chart status may challenge that title), Britney Spears’ debut film, Crossroads, was a minor hit with a $14 million opening week-end gross. Although her ‘acting’ abilities were, for the most part, slammed by the critics she seems to be on the fast track to success. Spears is set to produce and star in a film that is based around the Nascar racing world. But will her film success be dependent on her musical success? With the teen pop boom running out of steam…only time will tell.

MANDY MOORE Hot on the heels of Britney and Christina, Moore found platinum success with her debut CD, So Real. Her third CD, Mandy Moore, failed to match the success of that debut barely reaching gold status. A small role in the Princess Diaries launched her acting career, but it was the surprise hit, A Walk To Remember, that solidified her leading lady status. Her burgeoning acting career has introduced her to an audience who may not have been familiar with her singing career. It’s a win win situation. She is co-starring with Elijah Wood in the upcoming film, Try Seventeen, as well as working on her follow-up CD. Hollywood is touting her as a hot property on the verge of something big.

AALIYAH She had been a platinum-selling R&B diva before she started her movie career with Romeo Must Die. But The Queen of The Damned could have launched her into a full-fledged movie-star had it not been for her tragic death. The movie debuted at number one at the box office and she was set to star in the two sequels to the Matrix movie. Unfortunately we will never get to see what might have been.

BEYONCE KNOWLES Destiny’s Child may have been over-exposed (and under-dressed) in the last couple of years so it made good business sense for the group to carve out their own temporary independent careers. All eyes seem to be on their controversial lead singer, producer and songwriter, Beyonce Knowles. Austin Powers has made her a movie star but she will have to exhibit real talent if she wants to be taken seriously as an actress. An up-coming film co-starring Cuba Gooding Jr. could do the trick. She is not abandoning her music though. Look for her solo CD to be released by the end of this year or early 2003.

AND THEN THERE’S…MARIAH CAREY The biggest selling music artist of the 90′s starred in Glitter, one of the biggest box office bombs of 2001. The movie and her acting both got scathing reviews, a sure-fire bruise to her already fragile ego. It was not a banner year for her in general. The movie’s soundtrack failed to match the success of any of her previous CDs. Adding fuel to the fire, she ‘parted ways’ with Virgin records and suffered a physical and mental ‘breakdown’. A veteran of the music industry she now had to compete with artists 10 years her junior (and with half her talent). Things seem to be taking a turn for the better. She recently signed a deal with Universal Music and her upcoming HBO film, Wisegirls, got good reviews when it was screened at the most recent Cannes Film Festival. Mariah even got critical raves for her acting. Go figure. She may just have the last laugh yet.
