Big Winner Eminem Justly Jeered at VMAs

Posted by Adam Gonshor on August 30th, 2002

It should have been a night for Eminem to celebrate his four MTV Video Music Award wins, but the rapper acted like a child, and was consequently booed by the audience.

As Christina Aguilera, who has been the subject of insults by Eminem in a past video, handed him an award, it was clear she did not want anything to do with him, as the rapper swiped the award away. He then referred to Moby, who was sitting a few rows back in the audience, as a ?girl,? which signaled a start to the jeers. They continued, as Eminem said, “I will hit a man with glasses.”

Eminem started a rivalry with Moby because he refereed to Eminem?s lyrics as ?misogynistic.? Eminem then spoofed Moby in ?Without Me,? the video that won the 4 awards last night.

Britney Spears gave a birthday cake to Michael Jackson, and said, ?to me, he is the artist of the millennium.? Jackson thought he had actually received an award, and then began his acceptance speech.

“When I was a little boy in Indiana, if someone had told me as a musician I would be getting the artist of the millennium award, I wouldn’t have believed it,” he said.

MTV later said there was no such award.

Other highlights included Nas and Ja Rule singing for an end to feuds, drunken Pink accepting an award, Avril winning Best New Artist, and Christina Aguilera?s lack of an outfit.

Some sour notes were some bombed Jimmy Fallon jokes, a surprise, yet awkward performance by Guns N? Roses, a lypsynked performance by P. Diddy featuring Usher, Pharrell Williams, and Busta Rhymes, and the way MTV taped the awards, making it feel like a documentary or a live concert.
