Athens Games Requests George Michael
In light of recent controversy over recent problems such as construction falling behind schedule, and fears it won?t be ready in time, the Athens Olympic Committee has asked George Michael to write a theme song for the 2004 games, in light of recent contreversy surrounding his new single ?Shoot the Dog,? which criticizes British P.M. Tony Blair?s relationship with U.S. President George Bush.
39-year-old Michael, who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in northern London, is of Greek heritage. However, he has had numerous controversies after his days in the 80?s pop duo Wham!, some of which can?t be printed here. Most recently is his song ?Shoot the Dog? which is being released in stores July 29.
Anyone watching the animated video will realize that the dog he refers to is Tony Blair. It starts with Bush being portrayed as an immature dimwitted President (hmmm…) needing political advice from a sock puppet. Other scenes involve Bush throwing a ball on the White House lawn and Blair going to fetch it, and then Bush scratching Blair?s belly. Also, a verse talking about issues in Israel with the Gaza Strip shows Saddam Hussein launching a missle with the U.K. decorated as a bullseye, while another colour change for the U.K. shows it as an American flag with Blair riding it across the Atlantic and lassoing the Statue of Liberty. Even worse is a scene in the Blair?s bedroom with Tony showing a lack of interest in his wife Cherie Blair, and even putting on an American blindfold. Then Bush jumps up between the couple and we see him clearly enjoying being there. The next bedroom scene shows Michael stripping down to a thong, and trying to get with Mrs. Blair in bed. Another scene shows Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles on a balcony waving to the crowd, before the Queen busts a move with Michael, and the Prince fails miserably. For her efforts, Michael flicks the crown off her head and onto her son?s. Finally, it ends with Michael dressed as all 5 Village People (he can do that when he?s a cartoon), and shows Bush and Blair dancing a tango with Blair wearing a frilly red dress.
The lyrics are not appropriate for this web site, but all-in-all attack Blair on his relationship with Bush. Michael denies this song is anti-American. He says in a statement on his web site that this song is supposed to be a warning not to attack Saddam Hussein, saying Hussein would have nothing to lose if he is cornered and call for an unimagineable attack.
The lyrics, video and a small part of the song are available on his website at www.georgemichael.net.
