Wyclef Arrested in Protest
Wyclef Jean was among ten people who were arrested for disorderly conduct Tuesday in New York City during a rally. Thousands of people, including an estimated 20,000 school children, attended near City Hall to hear hip-hop stars and politicians denounce proposed cuts in New York City school funding, the AP reports.
The rally was organized by the United Federation of Teachers and the rap mogul Russell Simmons’ Hip Hop Summit Action Network. They believe New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is unfair with a proposed budget cut that he says will help bridge the city’s $5 billion budget deficit.
The permits for the rally forbid any performances. Jean was arrested after he tried to perform, the AP reports. However, MTV says Jean was arrested after police turned him and 10,000 others away because there was no room for them in the barricaded perimeters.
Jean “was so peeved, he laid in the street as a form of demonstration. He was lead away by police in handcuffs after refusing to leave,” MTV reports.
Among the celebrities who attended were Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, and Chuck D.
